Let’s discover some of the ranges targeted at our most common haircare concerns and tips on how you can identify these in your own hair at home.

Care for hair

Dry Hair

Dry hair can be identified visually or by touch. You may notice when looking at the hair, it feels lifeless, is lacking in shine and appears duller especially towards the ends. To touch, the hair may feel rough and difficult to detangle. Dry hair occurs when the external layer of the hair, also known as the cuticle, is altered, resulting in moisture lost. This can be due to several reasons, from genetic, to external factors such as pollution, heat styling or even harsh weather conditions.

Pro tip to try at home! The dryness test

Treating dry hair starts with understanding the level of dryness or dehydration. Start by taking an inch section of hair between your thumb and fingers and run down the hair, from root to tip. Pay attention to how the surface of the hair feels. You may notice that the hair feels rougher under your fingertips towards the ends – this means there is slight dryness to the hair. If roughness can be felt from the mid-lengths to ends, or from the roots to ends, the hair has deeper levels of dryness and will benefit from a haircare routine with products that offer intense hydration and nourishment.

Damaged Hair

Damaged hair is often confused with dry hair. So, what is the difference? Dry hair is lacking in moisture, whereas damaged hair is lacking in essential proteins. The lack of these proteins can leave the hair feeling fragile, weak, and brittle, or in some cases lead to breakage. Damaged hair can be caused by several factors including chemically treating the hair, the overuse of heat tools without heat protection and environmental factors such as UV exposure. Damaged hair requires extra restorative care to help rebuild the internal structure of the hair and restore missing proteins.

Pro tip to try at home! The elasticity test

You can test the strength of your hair at home by carrying out an elasticity test. Start by taking one strand of your hair when it is dry and wrap each end around your fingers. Pull gently on either side, stretching the hair and observing how it ‘bounces back’. Healthy hair should feel springy and flexible, and return to its original form. Damaged hair may stretch and return, however you may find that the middle of the hair coils. If the hair snaps of breaks when being pulled gently, this is a sign of more severe damage.

Hair Fall

It is normal for us to lose, on average, 50-100 strands of hair a day. If you are however finding increased amounts of hair in your hairbrush, in your shower, on your pillow or on your clothes, it could be a sign that you are experiencing hair fall. This level of hair fall can be triggered by many factors including lifestyle factors, environmental factors, and hormonal changes.

Pro tip to try at home! The brush test

A simple way to test for hair fall as a concern is by simply brushing through your hair. Start with clean hair and a clean hairbrush or comb. Brush through your hair in a fluid motion, passing through the hair several times. After brushing, take a look at your hairbrush to evaluate the number of hairs lost. If you are noticing more hairs in the brush than usual, this could be a sign that you are experiencing hair fall.

Dull Hair Seeking Shine

Dullness can be caused by changes in season, product build up or certain lifestyle factors. If you find your hair is feeling flat, lifeless and has lost its shine and vibrancy, changing up your haircare regime can help to boost the gloss and overall health of your hair.

Pro tip to try at home! The shine test

Start by taking an inch section of your hair. Flip the mid-lengths and ends of your hair and place them near the root. Compare the mid-lengths and ends to the hair closer to the root and observe the way they may reflect the light differently. If you find there is a big difference in the appearance of the hair and the shine, your hair may benefit from a shine boosting routine! Read on to discover the regime for you…
